Design & Construction

Library Walk at night

Can a building inspire innovation? Will a place promote learning? Should an environment aid in healing? We believe the answer is unequivocally, yes. That’s what drives the work behind UC San Diego’s Capital Program Team.

Campus Development

To better serve the UC San Diego community’s needs and offer a better student experience, the campus is transforming itself into a living and learning community that will allow us to provide housing at below-market rates, new academic and research buildings and mixed-use spaces to enhance the user experience.

  • The new Light Rail Transit line will link the campus to downtown and the Mexican border with two stations serving the campus.
  • The new Gilman Bridge will unite existing campus roads on both sides of the I-5 freeway.
  • New housing projects have opened and some are in various stages of design and approval.
  • Major academic projects are expected to be brought to the Regents over the next two years.
  • The newly opened Jacobs Medical Center expands East Campus healthcare services.

Capital Program Team

UC San Diego’s Capital Program Team is comprised of two units: Design & Development Services, charged with campus visioning support, design development and regulatory functions, and Capital Program Management, which oversees project management and delivery.

Together, these two units implement the university’s $3.2B capital improvement program shepherding projects that exceed $750,000 from inception to occupancy and providing unmatched care and custody over the university’s assets. They oversee all aspects of planning, design and construction management to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget and to the stakeholders' satisfaction.

Projects below $750,000 are managed by the Facilities Management – Project Management group and include deferred maintenance, building renovations, rehabs and space repurposing.
