New Associate Vice Chancellor of
Capital Program Management

Eric C. Smith

After an extensive executive search, Eric C. Smith has joined UC San Diego’s capital team as the new Associate Vice Chancellor of Capital Program Management. Eric brings 40 years of leadership experience in facilities design and construction management.

Before coming to UC San Diego, Eric was the California Regional Manager for OAC Services Inc., a construction management firm focusing on Technology Campuses in the Silicon Valley, and served as Executive Director of Vanir Construction Management in the Bay Area. Prior to his recent private sector experience, Eric spent 12 years at the University of Washington as the Director of Major Capital Projects where he oversaw a $1.5B portfolio of public university projects, including a new hospital wing and emergency department for Harborview Medical Center. Before the University of Washington, Eric worked for Clark Construction for five years after he served 20 years as a Commissioned Officer in the United States Navy Civil Engineer Corps, including Commanding Officer of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion ONE (Seabees).

Eric earned a Bachelor Degree in Ocean Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and a Master’s Degree in Construction Management from UC Berkeley.

In his role as Associate Vice Chancellor of Capital Program Management, Eric is responsible for the implementation of a $3.2B Capital Program which aims to enhance the student experience, expand our research prowess and improve the delivery of advanced health care.
